Generally speaking, if a foreigner is granted a temporary residence he or she is authorized to stay in Germany for a period. Residence permit options

If you intend to stay in Germany for a period longer than 6 months, you must apply for a residence permit and not for an entry permit (visa). Residence permits are issued by the authorities in Germany. They are solely issued for stays that exceed six months.

Temporary residence permit

Permanent residence permit

As an exception, the law establishes some criteria by which the said 5 years' residence period is not required to obtain permanent residence.
