Permanent residency refers to a person's visa status within Latvia. The person is allowed to reside indefinitely within Latvia if he or she is not a citizen. A person with such status is known as a permanent resident.

Generally speaking, if a foreigner is granted a temporary residence he or she is authorized to stay in Latvia for a period. Permissible period of stay is superior to ninety days and inferior to five years, mostly. However, immigration law of Latvia has several items listed where different terms apply.

Residence permit options

If you intend to stay in Latvia for a period longer than 6 months, you must apply for a residence permit and not for an entry permit (visa). Residence permits are issued by the authorities in Latvia. They are solely issued for stays that exceed six months.

Temporary residence permit

Permanent residence permit

Permanent residence implies living and working in Latvia with the same rights as the local people of Latvia. Permanent Residence Permits are granted to foreigners who have satisfied one of several rules set out by immigration law of Latvia.
